The Simple Woman’s Daybook: February 24, 2011

I Found this series of prompts at www.thesimplewomansdaybook.blogspot.com.  Since I’m diving into the value of to-do lists, I thought this might be a good way take a brief inventory of the smaller moments in my day, the ones that don’t necessarily get put on a list.

Outside my window…
No windows in the Writing Center!  The fluorescent lights don’t create the most calming atmosphere.

I am thinking…
about my student that I’m waiting for.

I am thankful for…
our apartment.  The green shag carpet is a little much, but I like to consider it “earthy.”

From the kitchen…
Made cranberry-orange sweetbread last night.  It was great this morning.  Tonight is Fondue Fiesta night !

I am wearing…
Jeans, plaid peasant-style shirt, sandals, and the pearl earrings B. J. got me for Valentines’.

I am creating…

Yet another dishrag. Just learned how to knit from my mother-in-law, and now I’m in the practicing stage.
I am going…
to class later tonight.  The class is on Civil War literature, and tonight we’re reading a memoir called “Company Aytch: or, a side show of the big show.”  A fun read—mostly because of its unique perspective on death and war.

I am reading…

“Company Aytch,” of course! I’m also digging into Seamus Heaney’s collected poems and essays in Opened Ground and Finders Keepers respectively.  Heaney is wonderful; it’s so interesting to see how detail-oriented he is with his form.  Nothing careless about his poetry.

I am hoping…

That fondue fiesta night turns out as well as I hope.  I tried to make stove-top mac and cheese the other night; the mac and cheese was a disappointment, but the cheese sauce I whipped up was perfect for dipping.  Hence, fondue fiesta night.

I am hearing…
the sounds of my coworkers.

Around the house…
Saving up for a classic Persian rug for the living room.  The green-shag that came with the apartment has grown on us, but we would both love something a little nicer, as well as dog-friendly.  We don’t have a lot of money to spend on interior decorating, but it’s always nice to think of ways to make our space a little bit more welcoming.

One of my favorite things…
Angel food cake.  I bought a small loaf this morning at the store to top off fondue fiesta night…

A few plans for the rest of the week…
Work on writing assignments for class, do some freelancing (to help pay for the rug!), and maybe hang out with our friends on Friday night…

A picture thought I am sharing…
Dinner from last night (it was just so pretty!): Baked tilapia over rice with fruit salsa.  The healthiest thing I’ve cooked in a long time.
